Gilhooley’s Restaurant-Must try the Oysters

I’m Here For the Oysters, But I’ll Stay for the Beer and Atmosphere

Gilhooley’s Restaurant has no website, no Facebook page and really just word of mouth advertising only.  So, it’s any wonder how they have become so famous.  I’ll tell you why, because their oysters are some of the best you will ever have!

Located in sunny San Leon (or Dickinson if you follow the official address), Gilhooley’s could definitely be considered a “hole in the wall” place.  As you walk up, you’ll observe what looks like a shanty of a place but don’t let that dissuade you.  There’s plenty of outside seating underneath gigantic shade trees.  The tables are unassuming with wood tops (some rotted) and casual lawn style chairs.  You’ll notice chintzy lights strung across the trees with some globes missing.    There’s a large bar inside or outside to enjoy a cold beer; but don’t expect an extensive collection of beer and wine for that matter, its the price and that its cold, right?  Expect a casual laid back attitude while you’re there.  No hurries-no worries.  While you’re there, go exploring around the outside.  There’s a lot of funky decor items to get a giggle from.  Don’t expect a fancy bathroom; come on, it’s a dive place with great food!

Cash Only-Leave your under 18 kids and fur babies at home

Their menu offers a variety of items but you should really do yourself the favor and at least try their specialty grilled oysters.  Their other seafood dishes are also terrific.

Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah Boardwalk has something for everyone!

Located front and center to the busy “gateway to the bay”, you can find a variety of things to enjoy in and around the Kemah Boardwalk.  The “Boardwalk”, located in Kemah’s “Lighthouse District” is a collection of shops, amusement rides, restaurants, entertainment venue and the waterfront boardwalk area.  It is family friendly, but not pet friendly, so you will have to leave your fur babies at home.

Year Round Events

Most of the year round events are free to the public. Its best to check their website for the latest event details. The Boardwalk does charge to ride the amusement rides by either paying a per ride fee or as a day pass.  The boardwalk is a great way to stroll along the waterfront and watch the boats go by or just catch a nice sunrise or sunset.  If you want a front row seat to the action on the water, the Boardwalk Beast power boat will take you out into the Bay for a short ride.  There is a “free” splash pad for kids to enjoy on the hot summer days.

2 other popular annual events held around the Boardwalk are the “Yachy Gras Boat Parade” and “Christmas Boat Parade”.  The decorated boats come right by the Boardwalk and its a lot of fun to see the detail of decoration that some of the boats prepare.  “Rock the Dock” summer music series is also a popular activity.

Fireworks over the Bay!

During the summer months of June and July, the Boardwalk hosts fireworks over the bay.  These events tend to be very popular so you will want to plan to arrive early for parking and to get a good view.  The fireworks are every Friday during those months, and tend to be about 15 minutes long and start promptly at the scheduled times.

Shops and Dining too!

There are a variety of restaurants for waterfront dining…choose from seafood, steaks, TexMex, sushi etc.  There are also eclectic little shops to stroll in and out of in the immediate area too.

All Day Ride Pass

If you plan to make a day of your visit, consider purchasing an All Day Ride Pass.  Unlimited rides for the entire day but the pass excludes the Boardwalk Beast.

$18.99 (under 48″)

$24.99 (48″ and up)

You can also buy individual tickets for the rides but it tends to be more costly if you plan to enjoy more than one ride.

Friday: 11am – 10pm
Saturday: 10:30am – 11pm
